  • Release date: Q4 2022 (Early Access)
  • Price: TBD
  • Platforms: Windows (Epic Games)

A standout indie gem at this summer's game festival is Witchfire. That's a far cry from the story of the astronauts' pre-2014 work The Disappearance of Ethan Carter. Astronaut also previously announced the Witchfire in December 2017.

Witchfire is a first-person shooter with procedurally generated elements. It's definitely a dark fantasy with all its demonic magic and other otherworldly horrors.

Witchfire's Epic Games Store page also claims the game is "roguelite for roguelite haters." Not sure what that actually means as they don't elaborate on the idea.

I Found a Witch! May We Burn Her?

The game is set in a world where magic actually exists and all the dangers and wonders that come with it. Humanity desperately wants to win the war against powerful witches. In its darkest hour the Church has turned to forbidden magic and sinners to take on the mantle of witch hunters.

Then the mission of these witch hunters is to destroy these evil witches. Ultimately their goal is to defeat the evil leader the Black Sea Witch. Only with the help of the players can humanity have a chance against the darkness.

Take the Fight to the Witches

Witch hunters will be equipped with blessed weapons capable of fighting evil and its ilk. They'll wield machine guns overheated revolvers powerful shotguns and more to eliminate enemy vulnerabilities.

Further they themselves are full of magic. The witch hunter will have a range of spells with different effects. Frost ripples erupt from their hands freezing enemies in place and setting them up for perfect targeting practice. Waves of Force can also be summoned Shock enemies from thin air and give you plenty of time to reposition yourself.

When the going gets tough you may always rely on a dependable fire to burn down your enemies. Fire spells and effects look glorious and can purify any evil.

On the other end of the spectrum are the dark forces. Various enslaved demons and other creatures will face off against witch hunters. However the dark forces were not overthrown. They will also be able to use spells. An example of this is the use of demonic runes Protect yourself from harm.

The Earliest of Accesses

Astronauts have decided to release Witchfire in Early Access before the full release. They believe that the Early Access version will help them in the long run as they will be able to get feedback and iterate faster. Early access is usually a good way too Get fan feedback and gather ideas from community engagement.

Early Access is planned for the fourth quarter of 2022 but no specific date has been set. This isn't set in stone however as The Astronauts firmly believe that if they feel the game isn't ready they won't release their game to Early Access.

"You only get one chance to make a first impression and we respect your time and money," reads their Early Access blog post.

The game's EA period will also be exclusive to the Epic Games Store like Hades. They even cite Greek Roguelikes as inspiration for their own journey.

Into the Grimdark World of Witchfire

Like Warhammer the world of Witchfire is described as "grim darkness". This time they have entered the realm of fantasy steampunk. As in Ethan Carter's Disappearance the team used "photogrammetry" to 3D scan various objects. then these scans Converted to assets that can be freely used when creating levels in-game.

Agents of Evil

This technique has worked very well for them because Ethan Carter's disappearance is so pretty especially considering the title came out in 2014. It also helps that astronauts use Unreal Engine 4 to power their games which is still pretty good - even though Unreal Engine seems 5 is just around the corner.
