Thanks to this year's Xbox + Bethesda gaming showcase we finally know what Starfield will look like. What's more we've got a few minutes of actual gameplay and wow it looks good.
The official gameplay reveal is less than 15 minutes long but every second oozes content. There's a ton of stuff to unpack here so let's dissect what we found!
Into the Starfield
Starfield will retain its ability to switch from first-person to third-person just like Bethesda's previous works. The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are somewhat independent in smaller regions or countries. But this time they have fully entered the atmosphere as the (literal) limit of the sky.
Todd Howard has confirmed that there will be more than 1,000 planets to explore grouped into over a hundred different star systems. Depending on the lens there will be many different areas that have a unique look or feel.
We can see there are desert planet areas filled with ice cyberpunk-themed towns huge ridges filled with various minerals and more. With so many assets plus a well-developed lighting engine will help keep areas looking fresh and unique.
On the other hand having so many worlds to explore does raise concerns for some worried fans. Creating a playable space for so many planets requires hundreds or even thousands of hours of manpower. unless the regions are procedurally generated and randomization is part of set them up.
It will be interesting to see how Bethesda addresses this. 1,000 planets wouldn't be a selling point if only a fraction were worth exploring. Maybe Howard implemented an enhanced Radiant Quest system that if a little random would create some truly memorable stories.
Going a step further some pointed out that having 1000 planets would make this a true modder's dream. This will give modders unprecedented freedom to create their own playground without getting in the way of most of the game's main content. We do know that modding and Bethesda games go hand in hand and even Morrowind is still going as it still receives fan-made content from time to time.
A Sky Full of Stars
Starfield's gameplay looks like a mix of Fallout No Man's Sky The Outer Worlds and Elite Dangerous (I'll do the final comparison in a minute). At first glance this may seem like a recipe for success.
Players will be able to roam around the planet and roam in any direction. To help them identify key points of interest they'll be outfitted with a reliable scanner basically Wikipedia that can answer all your questions about foreign material. The scanner can even identify enemies and Resources are scattered throughout the universe.
Players can use specialized mining lasers to attack resource nodes to collect them. These resources will be used later as players can create their own space base anywhere they choose. These respite places can be their home away from home or sandwiched between their favorite stars system. NPCs can even be hired to bring the base to life and they can help maintain daily activities. Think of an enhanced version of Fallout 4's settlement system.
Starfield Wars
Starfield will take combat very seriously especially gunfights. Bethesda has really beefed up Fallout 4's shooting mechanics. The shot feels punchy sounds fleshy and delivers a satisfying punch. The enemies of all players at the moment seem to be all kinds of pirates form.
Players will be able to shoot pirates with tons of futuristic customizable guns. These will include common ballistic weapons such as SMG rifles and shotguns.
The trailer doesn't hint that we'll be getting more exotic sci-fi flavors like energy or plasma weapons. Starfield still seems to be grounded in its "NASA-Punk" reality.
It's also worth noting that there doesn't appear to be an immediate V.A.T.S.-like system to help players target specific body parts or positions. There are also no melee weapons in the footage. There is a kind of bullet jump where you can propel yourself in the air if you run There's plenty of power just like in Warframe. We can also expect to see some combat in zero gravity.
Speaking of combat another previously unannounced feature is Starship Battles.
Starfield Citizen
Drawing on the experience of Star Citizen Starfield it has also implemented its own dogfights in space. If you can't fly in the vastness of the universe what's the use of your luxury spaceship?
Starfield will allow you to fly your ship in a cockpit view with a dashboard or see your entire ship. What's more you can engage in ship battles in all directions. Ship combat is exactly what you'd expect from chasing a target and trying it desperately Lock them in your line of sight to fire missile barrages.
The whole thing looks crazy and fun. When we pilot the ship in space we get a good idea of the actual speed. What's more blowing up your enemies looks great and satisfying. The way your enemies only explode partially instead of all at once is very interesting.
Look to the Skies
Starfield is scheduled to be released in the first half of 2023. It will be available on Windows and Xbox consoles. What we've seen so far looks good. Hopefully they'll be able to solve 1000 planets and make sure each one is satisfactorily explored. The presented facial animation is also It's a big improvement from Bethesda's previous work but some of it still feels stiff.
There is still a lot of time between now and its release. Be sure to check out our Starfield Wiki to learn more about the game.
